(cut/pasting my post from a couple other forums)
Just got back from the preview, and these are my thoughts.
1) Do not make a final judgment of the effects based on the teaser. The aliens look and move absolutely fantastic on screen, even one that is IMAX sized. They emote in a very natural and believable way, and I was able to stop judging them as CG constructs very quickly. Yes, you know they are CG, and if you try hard enough to can probably find something wrong with them, but you have to be going into the movie with the mentality of a headhunter to do so. And really, if you are doing that...why even go?
2) From the little bit of story we got to see, I could generally tell how the movie is likely to unfold. This isn't a fault really, because anyone can do this with any movie. That said, I was intrigued by what little story I got and look forward to seeing how it plays out. BTW, a little intro by James Cameron specifically stated that everything in the 16 minutes was from the first half of the film, so nothing was spoiled.
3) The 3D. I am someone who typically finds 3D to be an annoying gimmick designed for specific moments on screen, so to say the least I was skeptical and was planning on seeing this movie on a regular screen if possible.
Well, I've changed my mind. After a minute of getting used to it, the 3D in this movie is phenomenal. Rather than having gimmicks thrown in to emphasize the 3D, the movie was designed knowing you were going to have a hell of a lot of depth perception in the world. And I guess that is the best way to describe it. The movie itself has a very distinct depth to it that I haven't see done before. I think the hype for the technology is deserved, but I am not sure how it could translate to a smaller screen. On such a large screen, there are moments when you are very much sucked into the film, and I don't think that could be the case if the screen didn't take up nearly your entire field of view.
Oh, and if you get motion sickness I am going to guess this experience might prove a bit challenging. Smile
All in all, I was simply looking forward to the movie before this, but now I am drooling to see it. Color me sold.
